AB 2598, authored by Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-SF) would allow local governments to impose "rent" control on Assisted Living. CALA is working aggresively to prevent that nightmare from becoming a reality. Can you imagine operating an Assisted Living community under government-run rent control? What about having various local governments develop arbitrary definitions of "rent" and "services"?
The threat of rent control on Assisted Living will have a dramatic affect on the growth of Assisted Living at the very time we need to be preparing for the aging baby boomer population who will want access to quality Assisted Living care. Rent control will reduce quality, create more bureaucracies, stifle growth, and limit care options for seniors because Assisted Living is not rental housing - Assisted Living is 24-hour licensed care.
Thank you to everyone who has written letters and made phone calls to the California State Assembly opposing this legislation. Strong grassroots advocacy is imperative to successfully protecting protecting this popular and valuable senior care option. Everybody's efforts matter!
